Programme Summary

The National Blindness Control Programme of India (DANPCB) has initiated an IEC training programme in the Bidar district of Karnataka State of South India for community volunteers.

Communication Strategies

Training and orientation of community volunteers to aid in dissemination, interpretation and utilization of health information. Trained volunteers work within communities of little education or literacy to build and ultimately establish awareness of health information and alternatives in general and specifically, eye care. Volunteers, or "Village Counselors", will use different forms of media depending on the characteristics of the target group. Choices include: indoor, outdoor, folk media, print media and electronic media. To generate awareness among students and the public at large at a national level, "school debates" on blindness control and "Race Against Blindness" are being planned.

Development Issues

Health.

Key Points

The challenges are to motivate people with vision problems, sensitise their relatives and others in the society in varying socio-economic conditions to understand their problem and help take them for proper treatment, and to sensitise service providers to the difficulty of communication in rural areas.

Partners

Main partners - DANCPB and Government of India, with NGOs encouraged to help coordinate the programme on a local level.
