Programme Summary


Started in Mumbai in 1990, this non-denominational community-based foundation was established to address issues faced by gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) in India. The Humsafar Trust's work has four main components: community work, outreach into the gay and MSM groups, advocacy on gender and sexuality issues and research into sexuality and gender issues.

Communication Strategies



A number of community services are available for gay may in the communities where the group is active. The Humsafar Centre was established as a gathering place and educational centre and is one of India's only such safe spaces for self-identified gay and bisexual men. A telephone counselling line is also available along with outreach services and IEC materials.

Key Points



The main mission of this group is to educate and empower society to seek informed safer practices for better sexual health. Using highly participatory methodology, awareness of the pervasive invisibility of gay men is raised, and needs assessed on a continuous basis by community members.
