Programme Summary

Established in 1971, Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation actively engaged in communication documentation, research, training, publishing, and press development in the Asia-Pacific region. AMIC's goal is to contribute to the development of all forms of communication in this region by helping individuals and institutions involved in communications stay abreast of developments in the field. The AMIC broader purpose is to foster socio-economic progress in the region.

Communication Strategies

AMIC helps provide a forum for exchange of views and opinions among communication scholars and practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region. It also encourages the development of institutional capabilities to conduct appropriate research programmes through networking, exchange of research fellows, and joint research activities.

Specifically, there are 4 distinct programmes within the Centre (for further, regularly updated details on all these elements of AMIC's work - and additional new initiatives, visit the AMIC website.)

  1. Documentation programme - maintains a collection of documents and audio-visual materials on communication, including a collection of unpublished materials.
  2. Publishing programme - identifies information and publication needs of AMIC's constituents and undertakes publications. Also maintains a bimonthly newsletter (AMCB - Asian Mass Communication Bulletin) and a quarterly magazine (Media Asia).
  3. Research programme - initiates and organises research projects and research publications. Examples of AMIC publications include Asian Communication Handbook 2008, Free Markets, Free Media? Reflections on the Political Economy of the Press in Asia, and Media & Development in Asia: A Regional Perspective. Also jointly edits a biannual research journal (The Asian Journal of Communication) with the School of Communication Studies, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Click here for details about AMIC's current research projects.
  4. Training programme - organises workshops, seminars, and conferences to discuss communication issues and upgrade skills for institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. Examples include: Peace Journalism Workshop (August 2003, Taiping, Malaysia), Regional Consultation on Cyber Communities in Rural Asia (August 2003, Bangkok, Thailand), and Regional Consultation on Free Expression & Development (December 2003, Singapore).

AMIC hosts an annual conference, held in rotation by countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Recent conferences have been held in New Delhi, India (2009 - theme: "Media, Democracy and Governance: Emerging Paradigms in a Digital Age"), Manila, Philippines (2008), Singapore (2007), Penang, Malaysia (2006), Beijing, People's Republic of China (2005), and Bangkok, Thailand (2004). Delegates to the conferences come not only from the Asia-Pacific region, but also from Europe and the Americas. The events feature keynote addresses, plenary sessions, parallel sessions, as well as networking events, cultural programmes, media visits, and touristic opportunities.
