Programme Summary

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, the Department of Fine and Performing Arts along with HAWOCODE (Hanang Women's Counseling and Development Association) produced two short community based plays designed to sensitise the Barbaig community (a nomadic ethnic group in northern Tanzania) on the negative impact of female circumcision, domestic violence and the importance of sending girls to school.

Communication Strategies

A three week creative session among the three collaborators to produce the two plays. One play was on domestic violence and the problems of forced marriages especially of young girls. The other was on the problems resulting from female circumcision, both on the child and the mother. The plays were performed and then discussed with the Barbaig community.

Development Issues

Rights, Women, Children, Youth, Education, Community dialogue.

Key Points

The Barbaig community asked difficult questions after the performances. Key question: What positive alternative can be suggested to this cultural activity (FGM) rather than simply telling them it is bad and should be stopped?

Partners

Freidrich Ebert Foundation, University of Dar es Salaam, Hanang Women's Counseling and Development Association.
