Education and HIV/AIDS: A Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programmes

Publication Date

2003

Summary

This sourcebook aims to support efforts by countries to strengthen the role of the education sector in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. It was developed in response to numerous requests for a simple forum to help countries share their practical experiences of designing and implementing programmes that are targeted at school-age children.

The Sourcebook aims to document a variety of promising programmes for school-age children in a user-friendly format. It will begin to build a database, which will be updated periodically, to offer some insight into what kinds of programmes are running and what appears to be working. The Sourcebook will provide an opportunity to share ideas on how programmes may be re-contextualised to fit a variety of local circumstances.

The Sourcebook seeks to fulfill this role by providing concise summaries of programmes, using a standard format that highlights the main elements of the programmes and makes it easier to compare the programmes with each other. This publication is developed rapidly to fill a gap in information on programming within the education sector. It is a work in progress, and the content will be expanded and refined in use.

Topics included:
  • Mozambique - Action Aid: Stepping Stones Programme
  • South Africa - loveLife: Promoting Sexual Health and Healthy Lifestyles for Young People in South Africa
  • Tanzania - Students Partnership Worldwide: School Health EducationProgramme (SHEP)
  • Zambia - Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ), Family Life Movement of Zambia (FLMZ), and Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU):
  • Zimbabwe - Africare: Adolescent Reproductive Health Project, AIDS Action Clubs in Schools
