Description

Established in 1882, the University of the Punjab claims to be the first academic institution to be established in Pakistan in a Muslim majority area. The university is comprised of 4 campuses, 13 faculties, 9 constituent colleges, 64 departments, centres, institutes, and 434 affiliated colleges. It has 623 permanent faculty members involved in teaching/research and over 24,105 on-campus students. The Institute of Communication Studies was formerly named "Department of Journalism", and then the "Department of Mass Communication".

Programmes

  1. Diploma in Development Support Communication - This is a 1-year training programme for those who intend to use the theory's principles in communication practice. Students will be taught to assess the communication needs of organisations and development projects, to prepare effective communication strategies, and to produce messages for the specific needs of their particular groups of audience.
  2. Master of Science (MS) in Communication Studies (Development Journalism) - This 2-year programme covers developmental issues such as the environment, education, children and women, agriculture, rural life, poverty alleviation, health, and development planning and implementation, and encourages cooperative and self-help programmes.
  3. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Communication Studies - This 2-year programme (a Masters is necessary for acceptance) is aimed at integrating communication theory and research methodology into two phases of scientific inquiry: building theories and conducting scientific research. It particularly aims at promoting media research and preparing students for teaching Mass Communication/Journalism and holding administrative jobs in the fields of information and communication.
  4. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Communication Studies - An MA in Mass Communication, MA in Development Journalism, or MPhil in Mass Communication is necessary for acceptance. There is class work for two semesters, after which the students' registration is confirmed.

Other Information

Admissions to most of the degree programmes are generally accepted in the months of August and September each year. After the completion of admissions, the classes generally start in the beginning of October each year.
