Description

Human-centred Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Sport and Health Sciences, and Teacher Education form the core fields of research and education of the University of Jyväskylä. It is a large research university, with over 16,000 students, including international students from some 70 countries.

The Department of Communication consists of four major subjects: Journalism (emphasis on media), Speech Communication (emphasis on social interaction), Organisational Communication and Public Relations (PR) (emphasis on organisation), and Intercultural Communication (emphasis on intercultural and multicultural issues). The mission of the Department of Communication is to engage in high-quality research in the field of communication and media and to provide critical and ethical academic education for future communication experts. The University's social outreach is the basis for both goals.

Programmes

  1. Master of Arts (MA) in Intercultural Communication - This programme is a two-year interdisciplinary course of study designed to enhance the professional communication competence of students preparing for careers that involve significant intercultural contact. The studies encompass 120 credit units. Prerequisite for the studies is BA or equivalent degree (180 credit units) in a relevant field.

    Students need to complete an internship of 2-3 months and a Master's Thesis for their degree. In addition to courses on Intercultural Communication and Intercultural Competence, students may focus on issues related to intercultural and international relations, intercultural education and training, communication, language and semiotics, multiculturalism in organisations and society, and area studies. Language of instruction in Intercultural Communication is English.
