Strengthening Local Vet Networks to Prevent AI in Domestic Poultry

Country

Vietnam

Programme Summary

Launched in March 2007, this 5-month-long avian influenza awareness programme was implemented by the overseas aid organisation Australian Foundation for the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific Limited (AFAP). As part of this project, AFAP worked with public and private sector organisations in an effort to prevent avian influenza (AI) infection in domestic poultry in Hoa Binh province, northern Viet Nam - with a particular focus on communicating with small-scale poultry farmers.

Communication Strategies

In an effort to raise awareness at all levels about avian influenza (e.g., what it is, how it is transmitted, how it is prevented, and how to detect it), AFAP drew on collaborative exchanges as a core strategy. For example, the organisation worked to improve the veterinarian network in Hoa Binh province by linking paravets and government-run district vet stations, and by taking steps to improve the surveillance and reporting of avian influenza outbreaks.

Interpersonal communication also figured prominently in the training component of the project, which involved training government staff on how to engage with the private sector effectively in terms of direct financial contributions, technical expertise, and through the provision of laboratory or personal protective equipment. Through this component of the initiative, village vet workers also learned practical skills in safe poultry husbandry and avian influenza prevention in domestic poultry.
