The 1st Media and Gender Violence Conference in East Africa is organised by a ten member committee representing development organisations in Kenya involved in reproductive health, human rights, women empowerment, gender and governance, and development and population, as well as media practitioners and consultants, the Kenya Union of Journalists, Women in Media, filmmakers, artists, and community educators.


The theme of the conference is "Working With the Media To Eradicate Gender Based Violence". The conference aims to assess the role played by formal and traditional media in preventing and promoting violence against women. It therefore seeks to bring together key gender violence prevention and women's rights agents, activists, media producers, artists, scriptwriters, news editors, and journalists in the East African region to share lessons learnt, exchange information, assess intervention strategies, and suggest ways of making the media more effective in reducing violence against women.

Conference presentation themes will look at the role of media in the promotion/ prevention of:

• Sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and rape
• Domestic violence
• Political violence against Women
• Female genital mutilation and other cultural practices
• Economic deprivation of women
• Emotional violence

Presentations will also cover:

• The root cause of the culture of violence in society
• Women in war and conflict situations
• The arts and media for change
• HIV/AIDS and reproductive health rights of women
