Description

Royal Roads University (RRU) is a public university in Canada created to solely address the needs of the global workplace through applied and professional programmes. RRU offers programmes that provide education based on the needs, schedules and lifestyles of learners and the demands of the global marketplace. All programmes at RRU make extensive use of team-based learning to provide learners with insights into leadership and organisational dynamics and to create a challenging and supportive learning community that fosters personal and professional achievement.

The Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences provides programmes that focus on the skills, knowledge, theory, and research that create workable strategies for some of society's most intractable problems. Dedicated to studies involving leadership, communication and culture, peace and conflict, the environment and sustainability, and information and society, this faculty focuses on both grappling with issues and finding concrete solutions.

Programmes

  1. School of Environment and Sustainability - Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication - The MA in Environmental Education and Communication is a leadership programme focused on developing the competency and skill of educators and communicators who have an interest in, or a responsibility for, presenting environmental information to audiences. Learners typically will be in occupations ranging from teachers, educators, and journalists to communication professionals, public relations specialists, government policy analysts, and non-governmental organisation (NGO) programme developers. All programmes have a combination of short residencies and internet-based distance courses. In addition to the two-year Master's programme, there is a six-month certificate and a one-year diploma option as well.
  2. School of Leadership Studies - Master of Arts in Leadership - The MA in Leadership focuses on "the development of the sophisticated leadership and problem solving skills necessary for managing the complex learning organisations of the 21st century." The programme consists of two years of interdisciplinary study. In each year, learners will focus on "real world" problem-solving projects grounded in a rigourous theoretical understanding of the nature of modern learning organisations and the changing role of leadership within them. The programme is structured on the basis of two intensive residency periods, followed by distance learning. According to RRU, this allows mid-career professionals to substantially enhance their educational credentials, while minimising absences from their workplace. There a common curriculum for all learners in the first year and an independent, work-based problem-solving project in the second year.
  3. School of Peace and Conflict Management - Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Management - Royal Roads University's Conflict Analysis and Management programme is designed to produce leaders in the field of conflict management and resolution. Created for working professionals, this two-year interdisciplinary programme provides both the theoretical and practical skills necessary to identify, analyse, and manage group conflict in a variety of international and domestic arenas. The programme stresses a holistic, cross-cultural approach to conflict analysis and management and focuses on multiparty disputes between governments, corporations, and civil society. It is structured on the basis of two short on-campus residency periods, contemporary distance education technologies, and a work-based thesis project.
  4. School of Peace and Conflict Management - Thai-Canada MA in Conflict Analysis and Management - Starting with a residency in the Southeast Asian kingdom of Thailand, the Thai-Canada MA in Conflict Analysis and Management exposes learners to applied conflict theory and practice. In this two-year programme, students learn about intervention processes, citizen dialogue, reconciliation processes, multi-track diplomacy, systems thinking, applied research, and the law. Royal Roads University has developed a partnership with a consortium of Thai Universities, providing an opportunity to learn applied conflict theory and practice from both Canadian and Thai scholar-practitioners.
  5. School of Peace and Conflict Management - Master of Arts in Human Security and Peacebuilding - This programme is designed to produce international leaders in humanitarian intervention, social reconstruction, peacemaking, or peacebuilding. Created for those who work overseas in zones of potential conflict or where intrastate conflict has occurred, this two-year interdisciplinary programme provides both theoretical and practical skills necessary to help build peace and restore civil society to fractured countries.
  6. School of Peace and Conflict Management - Master of Arts In Disaster and Emergency Management (MADEM) - A blend of theory and practice, the MADEM programme will give learners an interdisciplinary overview of the field as well as practical knowledge and skills required to prepare for, manage, and recover from traditional and contemporary emergencies and disasters. Learners will study and develop skills in communication, conflict and crisis management, leadership, human resource and volunteer management, public education, and media management. The MADEM programme has specifically been designed to better equip professionals in their roles as mid- to senior-level managers from the public sector, private sector, and non-profit-organisations. This includes existing leaders or those who aspire to become disaster management and emergency services professionals.
  7. School of Communication and Culture - Master of Arts in Professional Communication - This MA programme welcomes participants who have an arts or science undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and aims to produce graduates with advanced professional skills and knowledge, capable of providing leadership in the knowledge-intensive workplaces and marketplaces of an increasingly communications-based world. Professional Communication is a discipline which engages in the study of information and how it is created, managed, distributed, and consumed.
  8. School of Communication and Culture - Master of Arts in Professional Communication with a Specialisation in Intercultural and International Communication - Learners in this specialisation complete the same first-year schedule of courses as the learners in the MA in Professional Communication. However, during the second year, learners pursuing this specialisation will complete courses that focus on intercultural and international communication dynamics, integrating aspects of international business, multiculturalism and diversity, international relations, social change and development, international reporting, and organisational communication.
