Description

The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is an international institute of higher education on social and economic change with a focus on development processes. It was founded 55 years ago by universities in The Netherlands to assist in the training and further education of professionals, especially from developing countries. The ISS is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Programmes

1. MA in Development Studies - The ISS offers a programme of studies leading to a Masters degree in Development Studies. With a strong focus on training in the theory and methods relevant to development studies, the MA programme intends to equip graduates with the skills to apply new insights in policy analysis in a practical context. The ISS MA degree in Development Studies provides eligibility for entry to PhD programmes in the Netherlands and other countries worldwide. The 15.5-month MA programme starts each year in September.
   
   
2. PhD in Development Studies - The Institute of Social Studies offers a four-year programme leading to the internationally recognised degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies. ISS has the right to award its own PhD degree. The PhD programme takes four years and is organised in four phases. In order to accommodate the constraints arising from the professional obligations of mid-career applicants, the PhD programme offers flexible academic arrangements. Well-prepared and well-supported candidates who are based in a research-oriented organisation or university elsewhere may be able to follow a tailor-made track, with shorter periods spent in The Hague. Students benefit from access to a multidisciplinary faculty working on different aspects of development problems, combined with fieldwork under local guidance and with institutional support.
   
   
3. Short Certificate Courses - ISS also offers a range of shorter courses, designed specifically to address the particular needs and interests of a broad range of development practitioners. Alongside the postgraduate diploma programmes and short certificate courses, they also offer tailor-made training for those with specific interests, and refresher courses for alumni.
