Description

Makerere University started its Mass Communication degree programme in 1988. The programme was run under the Department of Literature for 10 years. In 1998, Mass Communication became a fully-fledged department under the Faculty of Arts.

Programmes

  1. The Master of Arts in Journalism and Communication - The MA in Journalism and Communication is designed for individuals interested in the study of Mass Communication with special emphasis on theory, research, and specialised communication areas.

    The MA in Journalism and Communication emphasises the development of mass communication research skills and competencies. It seeks to provide an intensive theoretical foundation and a framework for advanced academic study and fosters an awareness of the history of mass communication and its roles in contemporary society. The course enables students to understand journalism, public relations, development communication, environmental communication and media, democracy, and human rights, among other issues.

    According to the university, upon successful completion of the MA in Journalism and Communication programme, students will have acquired the ability to carry out rigorous analytical research work, to do more critical reading of scholarly works, and to write well-researched academic papers and theses.

    The MA in Journalism and Communication is a two-year programme with three semesters of study and one semester of research.
