100 Dúvidas (100 Doubts)

Angola

Programme Summary

Launched in July 2009, 100 Dúvidas (100 Doubts) is a BBC World Service Trust programme, produced in collaboration with Trocaire and Radio Ecclesia, which is designed to improve government accountability and give a voice to citizens in Angola. The project, which will run until January 2011, seeks to promote debate, discussions, and understanding between government authorities and citizens through an interactive weekly radio programme and the project website.

Communication Strategies

100 Dúvidas is broadcast every Tuesday morning on Radio Ecclesia which covers the capital city Luanda, with a population of between four and five million people. The plan is to broadcast a second programme at the same time on Thursdays. The programme is divided into a number of segments:

  • Know Your Rights;
  • Good Citizens;
  • Your Opinion;
  • reports on current events; and
  • a follow-up on previous stories and listener suggestions.

The objective is to produce live, relevant programmes that follow current issues as they develop. Organisers say, the production team, which was trained by BBC Brazil journalist Graciela Damiano and local trainer Andre Mussamo, ensures that both sides of the story are heard and that Luanda’s citizens are kept informed of their rights.

Some of the topics discussed in the radio programme have included:

  • how to complain about the hospital system – including the admission of sick children to hospital rooms alongside children who have died;
  • the demolition of poor suburbs and how this affects the land rights of citizens; and
  • police fines and how to appeal against them.

In addition to listening to the programme on Radio Ecclesia, audiences can access 100 Dúvidas via a dedicated page on the Radio Ecclesia website (Portuguese). Listeners can send in suggestions by email or via a special phone line.

Key Points

According to organisers, feedback about the programme has been positive. One listener wrote, "I’m writing to you to congratulate you. I currently live abroad and I am thinking about returning to my home country, but I have been able to follow step by step the impartial, accurate, and high-quality news you are providing via the internet. I really hope that this programme will be successful and that it will allow the governing bodies to get closer to the person, which is essential in our country."
