Solanta - User’s Manual: Multimedia Knowledge Presentations

Publication Date

March 1, 2009

Summary

This book analyses knowledge in the context of computer systems: "Knowledge in the context of a computer system is a representation (text, data structures, structures of formal languages for knowledge description, computer programmes) of facts, objects, phenomena, abstractions (factual knowledge) and procedures/processes (procedural knowledge including tacit knowledge). Formal representations allow for automatic operations on knowledge (problem solving, decision-making support, information retrieval, creating new knowledge, dissemination)." It presents a system for organising and presenting knowledge as "knowledge objects" using technological tools.

The document, presented in the form of a manual, details the Solanta system, which addresses the issue of making possible the use of a computer-based organisational system so that people who have no computer training and may be using a computer system for the first time may organise knowledge in domains under their supervision. In addition, the Solanta system contains a module (editor) that allows the domain expert to create and update knowledge presentations.
