Programme Summary

Glocal Youth is an international initiative aiming to foster dialogue and exchange between different countries and cultures from so-called Southern and Northern regions. It centres around a website that includes resources and tools on media education and intercultural communication that is intended to serve as a guide to educate young people to develop an aware relationship with media. Partially funded by the European Union, Glocal Youth is being carried out by a team of researchers and intercultural operators coming from different European countries: Lai momo (Italy), Centre Audiovisuel Liège (Belgium), Grupo Comunicar (Spain), and Centro de investigação e de comunicação cientifica (Portugal). Their goal is to encourage boys and girls to reflect upon youth representations conveyed by mass media, facilitating the development of critical thinking skills and responsible citizenship through reflection and engagement on how young people in different contexts learn and live.

Communication Strategies

This research and educational initiative draws on the internet to equip teachers with practical tools to organise and develop classes on media and culture, ideally with boys and girls from 14 to 20 years of age. The didactic units, written in different languages, could also represent valid resources for the teaching of foreign languages. Offered in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, the Glocal Youth website features the results of Glocal Youth research:

  • Didactic units: the database with all the case studies analysed in the research.
  • Media education tools: resources designed to help educators organise didactic modules with their students.
  • Theoretical texts: articles, essays, and reports focused on the relationship between youth, media, and interculture. Case studies are offered on such issues as "youth representations in media productions in Latin America".
  • Auto-productions: the media products created by young people who have visited the Glocal Youth website and by several class groups who have used Glocal Youth materials in their scholastic activities. For example, one section features contributions - e.g., videos and presentations - on the topic "freedom of speech".

This website is meant to be dynamic; it doesn't end with the presentation of what has already been done in the life of the project, but but intends to be a place for ongoing dialogue with whoever wants to participate in the project. Instruments for interacting with Glocal Youth include:

  • New media analysis: "we invite teachers, educators, boys and girls, to apply the proposed analysis methods to new media products and to send the results to Glocal Youth, in order to keep on enriching the data base."
  • New auto-productions: Glocal Youth remains open to new media products created by students themselves.
  • Newsletter: a medium for informing people about the progress of the Glocal Youth project and about news regarding media education and intercultural knowledge.
  • Links: Glocal Youth provides a list of URLs with the intention that online users may go on to contact directly institutions, media, associations, etc. that are of interest to them.

Glocal Youth also offers periodic conferences to share research results and media education strategies, such as a November 2008 event in Brussels (information available in French only).

Development Issues

Youth, Media Education.

Key Points

Glocal Youth has been inspired by a series of questions: What image of young people and their world is conveyed by media addressed to this group? Are there any representations and stereotypes which occur frequently? What are the differences and similarities between media from Europe and from the developing world? Does a representation of "global youth" emerge, or do the differences between North and South prevail?
