"The work of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative redefines what is possible. It shows what we can achieve when countries cooperate around a clear goal."
This video from one of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners, Rotary International, features prominent personnel from countries and organisations around the world affirming their commitment to finish at last the work of eradicating polio from the face of the earth. Over 30 years ago, Rotary promised to work with its partners such as the Gates Foundation to act on their belief that every child deserves a chance to live a healthy, productive life. Those who speak on the video make the point that polio is a preventable disease, and so it is important to immunise children (through drops of the polio vaccine). Polio has been reduced by 99%, but countries such as Afghanistan are still suffering from it. GPEI's objective is to attain the certification for a polio-free Afghanistan in 2017.
Along those lines, Rotary stresses the need to be able to finish this public health effort that so many have contributed to. The organisation calls for the viewers' support for the end game - the drop to zero (cases of polio). "So please, stay committed. Or, become committed to add momentum to the final stretches." There is a spirit of confidence that, together, we will achieve a polio-free world.
